Beads of Life donates $1,000 to American Cancer Society

Now's there's an excuse to shop

...Shopping for a purpose can also be done from the comfort of home. Ocean City, Maryland local Stephanie Meehan recently started a home-based business selling cancer awareness bracelets by telephone and will soon have a Website, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Each cancer awareness bracelet is made of 14 colored beads, each representing a different type of cancer, and costs $18. Meehan, sold them for three years at the Annual Holiday Wrappings luncheon in December, and finally decided to turn her hobby into a business.

"People kept saying I should expand this, so I finally did," she said.

Since she began selling the bracelets, Meehan said she has received orders from across the country. She also hopes to sell the bracelets wholesale to various businesses, such as hospital gift shops and spas, where they can be sold as a retail item.
